Truecaller has launched a web version of its eponymous caller ID app that offers a host of features including SMS and chat mirroring, call notifications and a number lookup function on desktop. The company initially said the web version, called Truecaller for Web, would only be available to Android users in India, but it plans to roll out support in other regions in the future.
All Truecaller for Android users in India can now link their devices to the web client on a PC or Mac through a QR code. Currently, Truecaller limits the number of active web sessions to one, and also automatically logs users out after 30 days of non-use. Users can also manually unlink the browser from settings. This is similar to connecting the web version of a messaging program such as WhatsApp or Telegram.
Truecaller, which counts India as its largest market with nearly 259 million users, was late in introducing SMS and chat mirroring. Notably, Microsoft provides SMS mirroring service for both Android and iPhone users on Windows through its Phone Link function. However, this functionality can provide its users with some convenience in quickly replying to a text message or accessing one-time passwords (OTPs) to log in.
Truecaller also already offers users the ability to look up a phone number on its website, though with some price caps. The company said that users will now be able to search for numbers without any such restrictions on the web client. The web client also displays real-time caller ID notifications when the user receives a call.
The company said that 80 million people receive push notifications via SMS every day. It just means that these users have not denied Truecaller permission to read SMS. But it is not clear whether these people are using Truecaller as their primary SMS client.
Over the past few months, Truecaller has been focusing on offering more AI-powered features. Last month, it launched the 'Max' feature update for Android users to block all calls from unapproved contacts or spam detected by AI. In February, the company also brought its AI-powered call recording and transcription features to India after launching the feature in the US last year.
After recording lower revenue for the quarter, the company's stock fell 32% in October 2023. However, the stock has recovered from a low price of 24.47 Swedish krona ($2.32) to trading around 31.68 Swedish krona ($3) at the time of writing.
