A 15-year-old Apple Valley man who was using a garden tool was shot and killed Saturday by a San Bernardino County sheriff's deputy, according to a statement from the department.
The boy, Ryan Gainer, “chased the deputy in an attempt to assault him with a 5-foot garden tool,” the statement said.
The officer encountered Gainer after being called to a 911 call Saturday afternoon to a home in the 13400 block of Iroquois Road. The teenager was allegedly assaulting family members.
After he was shot, Jenner “was transported by ambulance to a local hospital where he later died from his injuries,” according to a Sheriff's Department statement issued Sunday.
Police body camera footage released to the Victor Valley News Group shows a deputy approaching the open door of the family home when a young man emerges from the home holding a long object raised toward the officer.
“Go back, go back or you will be shot!” The deputy shouts as he quickly moves backwards. The footage cuts to a second officer showing the officer standing back with his arm raised and his gun pointed at Gainer.
The name of the deputy who shot the young man was not revealed.
The agency said that the incident was transferred to its specialized investigations unit.
