A 15-year-old Apple Valley man who was using a garden tool was shot and killed Saturday by a San Bernardino County sheriff's deputy, according to a statement from the department.The boy, Ryan Gainer, “chased the deputy in an attempt to assault him with a 5-foot garden tool,” the statement said. The officer encountered Gainer after being called to a 911 call Saturday afternoon to a home in the 13400 block of Iroquois Road. The teenager was allegedly assaulting family members.
