A man and his dog paddled safely to shore Sunday afternoon after the pilot's small plane ended up in the ocean off Rancho Palos Verdes, according to law enforcement.
Sgt. Jeffrey Velasco, of the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department, said a call came in around 5:20 p.m. about a plane crashing into the ocean near Trump National Golf Club in Los Angeles.
The administration posted on the X website that it had sent an air rescue team for the small plane. Responding deputies said the pilot was not injured. The plane was a single-engine Piper Cherokee Six, Los Angeles County Fire Superintendent Bernard Peters told the Los Angeles Daily News.
The outlet indicated that the plane sank. The circumstances surrounding the accident were not clear Sunday evening, including where the plane took off from or whether it was attempting an emergency landing.
Edward Wargo, a spokesman for the US Coast Guard, said there was one person on board the ship with his dog.
“Both were able to swim safely,” he said.
The Coast Guard will now focus on ensuring there is no environmental damage from jet fuel, Wargo said. .
