The United States is “very focused on ensuring” Russia cannot develop new LNG projects, a senior US diplomat said.
Statements made by Jeffrey Pyatt, US Assistant Secretary of State for Energy Resources, to the Financial Times Commodities Summit regarding the LNG 2 project in the Russian Arctic, which is led by the private company Novatek.
The United States subjected the key project to direct sanctions in November, in effect preventing stakeholders from accessing the LNG. However, Novatek is also developing another major project in the Murmansk region.
“Our goal is to make sure that LNG 2 in the Arctic is dead in the water,” Pyatt said, adding that although he cannot preview future sanctions measures, we are very focused on ensuring that Russia cannot develop new weapons. [LNG] Projects for [redirect] The gas I previously sent to Europe.”
